Book-Anchor System Alignment Report

Purpose

Enforce the book-anchor hierarchy across ECC Research Atlas system-level documents, visualization reports, and paper ledgers. The Victor C. Li 2019 book (Springer, DOI 10.1007/978-3-662-58438-5) is the Atlas's primary anchor; the 13 foundational papers are the supporting / verification layer beneath that anchor; latest research is the extension layer; the user-lab connection is a later phase.

Before / after principle summary

Before:

• Some system files stated the book as anchor source, but the four-layer hierarchy (book primary, papers supporting, latest research extension, lab connection later) was not stated explicitly in one place.
• Several reports and ledgers described the 13 foundational papers with language that could be read as "the Atlas foundation" or "the primary evidence base," which conflicts with the book-anchor principle.
• Graph and map files did not clarify that the word "foundational" in filenames refers to the paper-support layer, not to the Atlas's primary foundation.

After:

• README.md, index.md, PROJECT_RULES.md, and NEXT_STEPS.md each contain an explicit "Evidence hierarchy (book-anchored)" block naming the four layers.
• Every touched report and ledger opens with a book-anchor note that reframes the foundational papers as the supporting / verification layer beneath the book.
• Graph and map files include clarifying notes on the meaning of "foundational" and on the book-anchored, paper-supported nature of the map.

Remaining paper-first wording

• Legacy in-body text in several reports still uses "foundational" as a shorthand for the supporting-paper layer. This is acceptable given the new top-of-file notes and the rule added to PROJECT_RULES.md; no in-body rewrite was required.
• Prompt files under 09_ai_workflows/ (e.g., claude_book_anchor_foundational_evidence_prompt.md) contain historical strategy text; these are workflow prompts, not Atlas claims, and were not edited.

Protected source directories left untouched

• 00_sources/** (Victor Li book originals, extracted texts, source notes, claim-evidence seed tables, foundational-paper originals, extractions, and source notes).
• 06_lab_position/.
• Paper card technical content in 03_papers/*.md (only the ledger and cards index received a top-of-file hierarchy note).
• Full graph candidate-edge CSV rows.

Recommended next phase

1. Sweep 02_concepts/, 04_material_systems/, and 05_experiments/ node files to ensure each ## Anchor evidence block cites the Victor Li 2019 book first and any foundational paper only under a "Supporting foundational papers" subsection.
2. Extend the concept graph to Chapters 3 through 10 with the same book-first, paper-supporting layering in edge labels.
3. Begin the extension layer: catalog 2019+ ECC / SHCC papers, Chapter 10 self-healing and self-sensing extensions, and mark them explicitly as "extension" edges in the graph.
4. Defer lab-position integration (06_lab_position/) until the three-layer stack above is verified end to end.
