What is ECC?

ECC is a cementitious composite designed to bend and form many tiny cracks instead of failing suddenly through one large crack.

Think of ordinary concrete as brittle glass: once a crack starts, it can quickly become a large fracture. ECC behaves more like a tough material: when pulled, it spreads damage into many fine cracks, so it can deform visibly before failure.
3. Technical explanation
ECC, or Engineered Cementitious Composite, is a micromechanically designed fiber-reinforced cementitious composite. Its defining behavior is tensile strain-hardening with distributed multiple microcracking, usually using a moderate amount of short fibers. The key is not just fiber addition, but matching matrix cracking strength, fiber bridging, interface properties, flaw structure, and processing.
4. Why it matters
ECC matters because crack distribution and crack-width control improve ductility, damage tolerance, durability, self-healing potential, and infrastructure resilience.

6. Common misunderstanding
Adding fibers to concrete does not automatically make ECC. Ordinary FRC may improve toughness but still localize into one dominant crack. ECC requires tensile strain-hardening and multiple fine cracking.
