Foundational Paper Integration Report
Book-anchor note: The Victor C. Li 2019 book (Springer, DOI 10.1007/978-3-662-58438-5) is the Atlas's primary anchor. The 13 foundational papers below are the supporting / verification layer beneath that book anchor, not the Atlas foundation itself. This report tracks how those supporting papers are integrated.
Snapshot after promoting the five remaining foundational-paper source notes into paper cards. All 13 preserved foundational papers now have paper cards in 03_papers/.

2. Paper cards in 03_papers/ (13 of 13)
All 13 foundational papers now have a paper card:

Full listing with source paths and Atlas node links is maintained in 03_papers/foundational_paper_cards_index.md.
3. Remaining evidence gaps
- Exact page numbers, figure numbers, and table numbers in each new paper card remain "as read from source note / PDF extraction" and are marked
needs verificationinside each card; they must be verified against the original PDF before being quoted into higher-order Atlas nodes. - DOI checks are still open for Lin 1997, Redon 2001, Li 2002, Kanda 2006, and Yang 2008. Li, Wang & Wu 2001 lists DOI 10.14359/10724 from the source note and still needs independent verification.
- The claim-evidence matrix at
07_visualization/chapter2_chapter4_claim_evidence_matrix.csvhas not yet been expanded with rows tying the five newly promoted paper cards to their concept nodes (fiber_bridging_law,strain_hardening_criteria,micromechanics_based_design,distributed_microcracking,crack_width_distribution). - Concept-level
02_concepts/interface_properties.mdand02_concepts/surface_treatment.mdnodes do not exist yet; several of the new paper cards imply candidate edges that would land on these nodes. - Graph edge promotions implied by the new cards are enumerated in
07_visualization/foundational_paper_graph_edge_promotion_plan.md.full_graph_candidate_edges.csvhas not been restructured in this pass.
4. Recommended next Claude task
Priority order:
- Verify DOIs, page numbers, figure numbers, and quoted numerical claims (sigma_cu 4.5 MPa, strain > 4 percent, G_d 4.5 -> 2.1 J/m^2, crack width around 60 um, 100 um saturated cracking, spacing 1-2 mm) against the original PDFs and mark the corresponding lines in each paper card as verified.
- Add claim-evidence matrix rows for the five newly promoted foundational papers.
- Apply the edge status changes listed in
07_visualization/foundational_paper_graph_edge_promotion_plan.mdtofull_graph_candidate_edges.csv(either through a targeted CSV edit that only flipsstatusfor existing rows, or by adding new rows for edges not yet present). - Create concept nodes
02_concepts/interface_properties.mdand02_concepts/surface_treatment.mdand re-run cross-link updates.
5. Claim-evidence matrix pass (this update)
- Created
07_visualization/foundational_papers_claim_evidence_matrix.csv(UTF-8-sig). - Total data rows: 70 (plus header) — exceeds the 60-row minimum.
- All 13 foundational papers appear in the matrix (row counts range 4 to 7 per paper).
- All required Atlas nodes appear in the matrix:
strain_hardening_criteria(12),fiber_bridging_law(9),flaw_design(8),micromechanics_based_design(6),direct_tensile_test(6),interface_properties(6),fiber_dispersion(5),processing_rheology(5),distributed_microcracking(4),crack_width_distribution(2). Additional nodes carried in the matrix:surface_treatment(3),pseudo_strain_hardening_index(1),two_way_debonding(1),matrix_micro_spalling(1),cook_gordon_effect(1). - Status distribution: 62 rows
verified_from_source_note, 5 rowsneeds_figure_table_verification, 3 rowsneeds_page_verification, 0 rowsverified_from_full_text(pending full-text spot checks), 0 rowsneeds_doi_or_bibliographic_verification(still tracked in Section 3 above). - Companion reports produced in this pass:
07_visualization/concept_evidence_coverage_report.md— row counts by Atlas node, strongest / weakest nodes, seed-vs-paper coverage, recommendations.03_papers/foundational_paper_evidence_ledger.md— per-paper summary of main claim contribution, Atlas nodes supported, evidence-row count, unresolved verification needs.
6. Next verification tasks (added by this pass)
Priority order (finer-grained than Section 4):
- Resolve the 3
needs_page_verificationrows and the 5needs_figure_table_verificationrows by grepping the corresponding.txtfiles under00_sources/foundational_papers/extracted_text/for the specific numeric constants (e.g.4.5 MPa,4.679 MPa,24-33 s,R^2 = 0.98) and figure tokens (Fig. 12,Table 3,Eq. (2)), then promote confirmed rows fromverified_from_source_notetoverified_from_full_text. - Resolve the still-open DOIs for Lin 1997, Redon 2001, Li 2002, Kanda 2006, Yang 2008, and independently verify DOI 10.14359/10724 for Li Wang Wu 2001. Any DOI that cannot be recovered from Crossref / journal metadata should be tagged
needs_doi_or_bibliographic_verificationon the corresponding rows in the matrix. - Cross-corroborate the four single-paper concepts (
two_way_debonding,matrix_micro_spalling,cook_gordon_effect,pseudo_strain_hardening_index) by identifying at least one supplementary paper each, and add rows in a follow-up pass (matrix expansion, not concept-node edits). - Add crack-width rows to
crack_width_distributionfrom foundational papers already in scope (Li & Wang 2006, Li & Li 2012) where crack pattern is documented but not yet extracted. - Only after (1)-(4), promote strongly-corroborated rows into the concept nodes' "Foundational evidence" sections. Concept nodes were not edited in this pass.
