Self-healing ECC explained
1. One-sentence answer
Self-healing ECC is ECC whose fine cracks can partially or fully seal and recover performance when exposed to suitable conditions.
2. Intuitive explanation
ECC already helps self-healing because its cracks are small. Small cracks are easier for hydration products, calcium carbonate, or other healing products to fill. Fibers also help by bridging cracks and slowing water flow.
3. Technical explanation
Self-healing ECC uses crack-width control, fiber bridging, binder chemistry, moisture exposure, and sometimes additives such as SAP or mineral healing agents to restore transport resistance or mechanical performance. Good evaluation should distinguish visual closure, permeability recovery, stiffness/tensile recovery, chloride resistance, and corrosion behavior.
4. Why it matters
Self-healing matters because it can extend service life and reduce repair frequency, but only if healing restores relevant durability functions, not merely surface appearance.

6. Common misunderstanding
Visual crack closure does not automatically mean the crack resists chloride penetration or corrosion. Different recovery metrics answer different durability questions.
